God has created me to do Him some definite service.
He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another.
I have my mission.
I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons.
I shall do good and be a preacher of truth in my own place.

St. John Newman

Happy Feast of the Presentation!

 …and Welcome Back!

Today is the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord!

This is the 4th Mystery of the Joyful Mysteries set of the Rosary depicting when Mary and Joseph took Jesus to be presented in the temple as was customary in those days.  When praying the rosary, the fruit of the mystery is generally stated as being obedience.  Mary and Joseph were obedient and presented Jesus in the temple.  Of great note here are the testimonies of Simeon and Anna.  if you have a chance, meditation on them.  They truly point to Jesus being the Messiah… the savior, God Himself in human form.  Whenever you have a chance to meditate on this it fills the heart with joy. it is the basis of our faith.  This reading along with two others can be found HERE.  You can also find information on HERE and why it is also called Candlemas HERE.

Welcome back everyone!  We are looking forward to a great Semester!  We’re having a planning meeting Sunday at St. Anthony’s at 10:30 ish (right after the 9:30 AM Mass and we’ll have free food) to talk about what we have planned, vote on some things and welcome new ideas.

The weekly bible study set! We’ve decided on 10:30 Sunday morning in the Youth room at Church to make the scheduling easy for everyone, and we will of course have continental breakfast food every week free of charge.  our bible studies have been so fruitful this past semester… it is exciting to start them up again!

In the works are a young adult rally with other Newman Clubs, movie nights, opportunities to meet other Newman clubs,  social gatherings and opportunities for serving others especially the elderly. If you can’t make it, watch this space for the New Calendar!

We’ve got a great group this Semester and a full officer lineup… Let’s welcome Carlos, Kayla, and Blake!

Letter From the Archbishop

News!!!!

Happy Third Day of Christmas!

I hope your vacation is going well… and that you are getting a lot of time with family and old friends. I hope you are getting a lot of time with God too! Prayer time can be difficult when busy, but when we aren’t as busy it is a good time to get into the habit again– to relax and soak in His Presence! For me, that works the best at Daily Mass- receiving Jesus in a physical way– there is nothing like it!  Some people like to read from the bible everyday.. there are a lot of options!

Today– the Third Day of Christmas– is the Feast of St. John the Evangelist. He is the Apostle and Gospel Writer from who, many argue, we get the most accurate image of Christ, especially in His great Love and desire to be close to us. Here is the collect for the Day that you can say as a prayer:

O God, who through the blessed Apostle John have unlocked for us the secrets of your Word, grant, we pray, that we may grasp with proper understanding what he has so marvelously brought to our ears. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Amen

Get Ready for Bible Study!

Last Semester I loved meeting with you all weekly and talking about our weeks and what God has to say to us through the bible. We had fellowship, the peace of God, and great drinks and conversation.  This Semester Carolyn has organized an online form to find out what your schedule is so that she can create the time that works best for everyone… go to http://www.doodle.com/tzbc2ib55rdsrxw9  and let us know! God bless you!

Summer Work Opportunity

Catholic Heart Work Camp is an organization that organizes teens to do service work for a week– it is a great organization and they need college students to work for them!  These are behind the scenes jobs too… so you don’t have to be a public speaker… check it out! Go to http://heartworkcamp.com/forms/staff%20flyer1.pdf  to check it out!

A few prayers for Finals…

Do you know about St. Joseph of  Cupertino?   He was a priest who, when studying for the first part of his Ordination, the Diaconate, was expected to memorize the entire New Testament. He was tested by having to expound on any passage that he was asked to, but he struggled in school and only managed to remember one passage.   When the time came to take the test, guess what passage he was given?  The exact one that he had memorized.   Then, when the time came to take the exam to be a priest, his entire group was ordained without examination.  He is known as the patron saint of poor students and test takers among other things.

So… the first prayer for finals is…

St. Joseph of Cupertino, pray for me/us.

OR

O St. Joseph of Cupertino pray for me

O Holy Ghost enlighten me

Our Lady of Good Studies pray for me

Sacred Head of Jesus, Seat of divine wisdom, enlighten me.

OR

God of Wisdom, I thank you for the knowledge gained and the learning experiences of the semester. I come to you this day and ask you to illuminate my mind and heart. Let your Spirit be with me as I prepare for exams, guiding my studies, and giving me insight so that I can perform to the best of my ability. Please grant me the strength to handle the pressure during these final days of the semester, the confidence to feel secure in my knowledge, and the ability to keep an appropriate perspective through it all. Help me to keep in mind what is truly important, even as I focus my time and energy on these tests in the immediate future. Finally, may I sense your peace in knowing that I applied myself to the challenges of this day.

Amen

OR From St. Thomas Aquinas:

Grant, O merciful God, that I may

ardently desire,
prudently examine,
truthfully acknowledge,
and perfectly accomplish
what is pleasing to You,
for the praise and glory of Your Name. Amen.

Dear Lord, please be with the Newman club as they study for exams. Bless them in all their work and help them to keep calm and trust in you.

See you next Semester!
